This is my life right now at 24 years old
Today I feel like documenting this point in my life.
Here’s the reality of my life right now and the thoughts I have at the moment:
Day Job
I’m 24 years old and I work 4 days a week testing people for STDs amongst other things. Some days are exhausting and I have to dissociate myself from the fact that I held 100 different people’s urine cups and I can smell whether they had coffee or not.
The company I work for sucks and sometimes I think “Wow, I’m surrounded by idiots”, but I have a good friend there that helps me stay positive.
I’m grateful I get paid well, but tbh most of my paycheck goes to my loans and taxes. California is one of the most expensive states to live in.
Trying not to think about this. I’m paying off my debt as fast as I can.
Composing
I’ve tried composing daily at the painfully slow rate of 4 measures a day using paper and pencil at the piano. Some cool results came from that and I plan on getting it recorded.
I’ve had a few spontaneous bursts of writing entire pieces but most days I don’t push myself.
I think staying involved with music however I can (learning through content online or composing at the computer or piano, actively listening to my favorite music and discovering things I didn’t hear before) is good enough.
Working towards being a professional media composer
8 months into 2022, I’ve only scored 2 short films but I have connected with 3 new directors with films in various stages of production.
Currently I’m in production limbo just waiting for 3 picture locks. I am passionate for all 3 of these new films, but I secretly brace myself for the possibility that it might not ever leave limbo.
ANYWAYS. Wow, I could potentially have scored 5 films this year. That’s a new record for me.
Oh and what else, I am a masters student now! I got accepted into ThinkSpace Education’s Masters in Professional Media Composition. I start in September. And it’s stupid cheap for what I’m used to paying for education in the U.S. I’m looking forward to 1:1 time with professional composers the most.
Personal Life
I’m generally really happy. I workout with a personal trainer and am growing muscles again. I’m eating more, sleeping more. I drink more coffee. I learn new things everyday and dabble in my many hobbies like languages, gaming, and gardening.
I’m kind of obsessed with the video game Ghost of Tsushima.
I see my friends more often.
Life is overall good!
Final Thoughts
I’m kind of mind blown by what my life was 3 years ago when I decided when I wanted to pursue composing. I still very much want to compose as a professional and give back by teaching others.
Although it’s not always ideal, I’m happy with the pace of life I have right now.
Year 24 of life is going well :)
